Agartala Expands City Water Body Rejuvenation Program

The Agartala Municipal Corporation has expanded its urban water body rejuvenation initiative to include more municipal lakes following the successful renovation of the Abhoynagar public pond. Engineering teams are currently overseeing the installation of perimeter walking tracks, solar lighting, and natural filtration channels designed to bolster flood control and enhance urban green spaces. This ongoing program builds upon the renovation of the historic Ujan Abhoynagar Bazar pond, which was inaugurated on October 3, 2026, by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha. The project was implemented under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme at a cost exceeding Rs 3 crore, featuring extensive beautification and infrastructure upgrades. Chief Minister Saha stated that these efforts are central to the government vision of maintaining urban ecological balance and improving the quality of life for residents, as reported by ANI News and ANI News.

New Sites and Tenders

Expansion efforts are currently targeting multiple sites across the city. Notably, the AMC initiated a tender process for the development and beautification of the Jora Pukur Pond in Ward No. 21, a project valued at ₹1,42,58,340 with an estimated 180-day completion timeline. Furthermore, Chief Minister Saha and Mayor Dipak Majumder have conducted inspections at other century-old sites, including the Prabhu Bari and Madhyapara ponds, directing officials to accelerate progress under the Smart City Project and Asian Development Bank funding. The corporation broader strategy, overseen by officials including AMC Commissioner Saju Waheed, aims to restore approximately 24 to 25 historically significant water bodies across Agartala to promote tourism and recreation.
