Adinno Z. Phizo, the long-standing President of the Naga National Council, passed away on October 8, 2026, at the age of 94. She died at approximately 8 p.m. at Bethel Hospital in Kohima after receiving treatment for a brief illness since October 5. A joint notification from the NNC and the Federal Government of Nagaland confirmed her passing and her lifelong dedication to the Naga national struggle.
Adinno Z. Phizo took over leadership of the NNC in 1990 following the death of her father, A.Z. Phizo. Throughout her time as president, she stayed committed to the political goals of the Naga people and continuously advocated for self-determination and sovereignty based on the 1951 Naga Plebiscite.
The NNC and FGN announced a period of national mourning and asked the public to observe the time with peace and unity. Groups like the Naga People's Front and the Central Nagaland Tribes Council expressed deep sorrow over her death. Her funeral is scheduled for October 10, 2026, at the Mission Compound Ground in Kohima, followed by burial in her native village of Khonoma.
