Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for Adani Power Limited’s 3,200 MW thermal power plant at Chapar in Dhubri district on 20 September 2026. This massive project is the largest single power generation asset in the Northeast region. Adani Group director Jeet Adani attended the ceremony alongside state officials and local representatives. Construction of this facility comes with a stated cost of about ₹48,000 crore, consisting of four separate units of 800 MW each. Officials expect to begin commissioning the plant in phases starting from December 2030.
The Chapar plant functions as a primary component of a broader ₹63,000-crore power initiative in Assam.
The group is investing roughly ₹15,000 crore into two pumped-storage plants totalling 2,700 MW through Adani Green Energy Limited. Jeet Adani stated that four to five local job drives resulted in the hiring of approximately 4,500 youth from Assam. Company and state statements suggest construction activities could support up to 20,000 jobs, while around 5,000 permanent roles may exist once the plant becomes operational. Appraisal documents indicate the land scale for the project covers about 585 hectares.
The plant utilizes ultra-supercritical thermal technology which operates at higher steam temperatures and pressures than older units.
Company representatives state this approach improves thermal efficiency and lowers CO2 per unit of electricity generated. Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited has begun construction on a Chapar to Rangia 400 kV transmission line and associated substations to support the plant. Successful completion of this project is expected to reduce the state reliance on imported electricity.
